About these works

Feeding Time, Monterey, dated 1918 and measuring 28 by 26 inches, comes from Fortune's Monterey years. A woman stands at a white picket fence feeding chickens beneath young trees in spring leaf, the whole scene built from short strokes of blue, green and white.

Boats, St. Tropez, an oil on board of 14 by 18 inches, shows the furled and drying sails of boats crowded together in the harbor, broken into flat planes of orange, blue and white. Its subject belongs to her years in Europe, when she spent time at St. Tropez, and its strong color and simplified forms are typical of the Post-Impressionist manner she developed there.

What this record tells an owner

These sales are not a price guide, and each Fortune is judged on its own subject, size, condition and history. Her views of Monterey Bay and the wharf, her St. Ives harbor scenes, her 1915 exposition pictures and her portraits are also central to her work, and none of them appears here.
